‘Pieces of You’ follows the themes introduced in previous single ‘Bookcase’: reflection, regret and realisation.
Sonically, the track sees the band revisiting alternate open guitar tunings to create space and brightness in an otherwise melancholy setting. The utilization of tremolo arms on the guitars have been re-introduced by the band to add to the warped canvas of emotional turmoil. Somewhat fittingly, the track is almost a throwback to the band’s earlier discography as SGO rediscovers the elements that brought the group together initially.
The refined simplicity in instrumental and production choices shows the dreampop outfit’s evolving maturity by emphasizing subtraction while highlighting key moments. Furthermore, the production choices of Tom Briese elevates the track from being boxed into traditional post-punk/dreampop production styles by adding modern pop inspired production.
